What is IndexNow?

Definition

IndexNow is a protocol for notifying participating search engines when website URLs are added, updated, or deleted. It helps communicate changes without waiting solely for routine discovery, but it does not guarantee crawling, indexing, ranking, or AI citations.

How does IndexNow work?

A publisher sends changed URLs to an IndexNow endpoint with a key used to verify control of the host. The protocol supports individual notifications and batch submissions.

Participating search engines can share the notifications, reducing the need to submit the same change independently to every participant.

A notification communicates that a URL changed; the receiving engine still decides whether and when to process it.

  • Host the verification key file as required by the protocol.
  • Submit URLs that actually belong to the verified host.
  • Send notifications for additions, meaningful updates, and deletions.

Why does IndexNow matter for B2B SaaS?

SaaS websites regularly update integration coverage, product documentation, and migration guidance. Prompt change notification can help participating engines learn that their previously discovered information may need refreshing.

That is especially useful when outdated documentation could mislead buyers.

IndexNow is not a direct submission channel to every answer engine, and a successful response does not prove that a generated answer has incorporated the new content.

  • Prioritize accurate notifications for commercially important documentation changes.
  • Keep ordinary crawlable links and sitemaps in place.
  • Avoid describing protocol participation as universal search-engine support.

What is an example of IndexNow?

A software company publishes a replacement authentication guide and removes an obsolete page. Its publishing workflow notifies IndexNow about the new URL and the deleted URL.

The new guide must still return useful content, and the removed page should return the appropriate status or redirect when relevant.

The notification complements those web behaviors rather than substituting for them or forcing a search result to disappear immediately.

  • Submit the replacement guide after it is publicly available.
  • Notify participating engines when the obsolete URL is removed.
  • Keep redirect and canonical decisions consistent with the actual migration.

How do you improve or measure IndexNow?

Connect notifications to real publishing events rather than repeatedly submitting unchanged pages. Inspect endpoint responses, key availability, and ownership validation.

Then use the participating engine’s relevant tools to investigate discovery and indexing outcomes separately. Server logs can help show later requests, but causation should not be assumed from timing alone.

AI citations require their own observation and cannot be inferred from successful protocol delivery.

  • Log submission time, URL, change type, and endpoint response.
  • Investigate invalid hosts, unreachable key files, and rejected requests.
  • Measure indexing status separately from protocol acceptance.

Frequently asked questions about IndexNow

Does IndexNow guarantee indexing?

No. It notifies participating search engines about changes. Each engine retains its own crawling, indexing, and ranking decisions.

Does IndexNow replace a sitemap?

No. Sitemaps describe a website’s URL inventory, while IndexNow communicates URL changes. A publisher can maintain both mechanisms.

Can deleted pages be submitted?

Yes. Deletions are part of the protocol’s intended use. The URL should also return a web response consistent with the actual removal or replacement.
