What is Share of Voice?

Also called SOV, AI share of voice

Definition

Share of voice is a brand’s proportion of a defined set of measured category visibility. For AI answers, it commonly compares qualifying brand appearances across selected competitors, prompts, and engines, using a methodology that must be stated explicitly.

How does Share of Voice work?

Share of voice starts with a bounded market view. Choose the brands, prompt categories, engines, and time period before collecting results.

Then divide the target brand’s qualifying visibility units by the total qualifying units for that competitor set.

The visibility unit might be one brand appearance per answer or a weighted recommendation position. These methods can produce different results from identical outputs.

Do not present a weighted score as a raw mention share, and do not mix AI mentions with advertising impressions without explanation.

Why does Share of Voice matter for B2B SaaS?

B2B SaaS buyers usually compare several vendors rather than evaluating one business in isolation. Share of voice can show whether a brand is gaining presence relative to the alternatives included in an audit.

It adds competitive context that an isolated mention rate cannot provide.

The boundary matters because an omitted competitor changes the denominator. A rising share can also reflect declining competitor visibility rather than additional brand mentions.

Report absolute counts and answer coverage so readers can understand whether the category itself received fewer recommendations.

What is an example of Share of Voice?

In a hypothetical sample, a fictional vendor receives twenty qualifying appearances, while two competitors receive thirty and fifty. The vendor’s share is twenty percent of the one hundred appearances. An answer can contribute appearances to more than one brand.

If the analyst removes the largest competitor, the same twenty appearances become forty percent of the remaining fifty. Nothing about the vendor’s observed answers improved.

This illustrates why competitor additions, exclusions, and alias changes must be documented when comparing reporting periods.

How do you improve or measure Share of Voice?

  • Select competitors that genuinely address the same buyer need.
  • Publish the counting rule and any position or sentiment weights.
  • Track absolute appearances alongside each brand’s relative percentage.
  • Maintain a stable comparison set or restate historical results when it changes.

Use separate cuts for engines and buyer intents before creating an overall summary. The measure is a custom reporting framework, not a native Google or OpenAI ranking signal.

Higher share does not establish market share, purchase preference, or revenue contribution without separate commercial evidence.

Frequently asked questions about Share of Voice

Does share of voice equal market share?

No. Share of voice measures selected visibility, while market share concerns a defined commercial market. The two can move differently.

Should the shares add up to one hundred percent?

They should when every counted unit belongs to the declared comparison set and each share uses the same total. Independent answer-level mention rates need not.

Can different tools report different shares?

Yes. Competitor lists, prompts, weights, and collection methods can differ. Compare methodologies before treating conflicting percentages as a data error.
