Does stale content reduce AI citations for B2B SaaS?
AirOps found that recently refreshed pages were common among ChatGPT citations, particularly for commercial questions. For B2B SaaS, this supports maintaining accurate buying pages rather than relying on publication alone, but it does not prove that changing a date causes visibility gains.

Executive summary
AirOps found that recently refreshed pages were common among ChatGPT citations, particularly for commercial questions.
For B2B SaaS, this supports maintaining accurate buying pages rather than relying on publication alone, but it does not prove that changing a date causes visibility gains.
Research background
Content freshness matters when buyers need current pricing, integrations and product capabilities.
AirOps examined more than 4,000 cited pages across 900 high-intent queries in 15 industries, recording update dates, publication dates, intent and content type. This is an external vendor study, not research conducted by AEO Operators.
How the research was done
AirOps collected update dates, original publication dates, intent, industry and content type for more than 4,000 ChatGPT-cited pages across 900 high-intent queries in 15 industries.
This article interprets the public findings rather than reproducing the study. The chart uses exact reported percentages for overlapping freshness windows and the separate older-content share.

What the research actually reveals
How recent were cited pages? AirOps reports that 35.2% had been updated within three months and 53.4% within six months. These are overlapping windows, not separate audience segments, so they must not be added together.
The report also says 26.2% had not been updated in over a year. Older content can still earn citations; freshness is not an eligibility rule.
Does commercial intent change the picture? Over 60% of commercial pages cited by ChatGPT had been updated in the past six months. That makes current buying information a sensible maintenance priority.
It does not establish the probability that an arbitrary refreshed page will be cited, because the sample begins with pages already cited.
The distinction between an update and a publication is operationally important. An established comparison page can remain useful if its evidence is maintained.
Replacing correct material purely to manufacture recency adds no buyer value.
The most defensible interpretation is that accuracy and recency travel together in the observed citations, rather than that a timestamp is a standalone ranking lever.
Implications for Series A to Series C SaaS companies
For Series A–C B2B SaaS companies, content maintenance competes with new category coverage for limited resources.
Start with pages where obsolete information could change a purchase: pricing, alternatives, implementation and compatibility. A stale educational definition is usually less urgent than a misleading plan comparison.
Assign a named owner to each buying page and connect revisions to product releases, pricing changes and recurring customer objections.
Keep revenue measurement separate from citation measurement. A refreshed page can improve buyer confidence even when its citation frequency does not move. Conversely, a citation does not demonstrate a qualified opportunity or a closed sale.
Actionable recommendations
- Create an inventory of commercial pages and identify the evidence each depends on. Verify product claims against current documentation, replace outdated comparisons and retain a visible, truthful update history. Put direct answers near the start and provide accessible supporting detail.
- Record citation frequency for a stable set of buying questions before and after substantive revisions. Keep unchanged pages as a comparison where feasible, and annotate product launches or model changes that could explain movement. Agree a review cadence based on how quickly the underlying facts change, rather than refreshing everything mechanically. AEO Operators is a natural next step for prioritising this maintenance backlog and connecting citation monitoring with qualified demand.
Research limitations
AirOps sells content software and has a commercial interest in content maintenance. The cited-page sample does not provide a matched population of uncited pages, and the public page does not establish random assignment.
Authority, content quality and topical demand could confound the relationship. The report uses both “60%” and “over 60%” in its commercial summary; this analysis retains the qualified wording from its detailed findings.
Results from ChatGPT should not be assumed to describe every answer engine.
