Summary

  • AEO gets your product named inside AI answers, not just listed in search results.
  • It matters because AI answers are taking a growing share of the clicks that used to go to websites.
  • AI tools name brands that trusted websites mention often and describe in the same way.
  • You can measure AEO by tracking how often, how high and how positively AI names you.

What is Answer Engine Optimization?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your brand named, quoted and recommended inside the answers that AI tools give to people.

When someone asks ChatGPT which project management tool suits a small agency, the AI writes one answer and names a handful of products. AEO is the work that makes your product one of those names.

An answer engine is any tool that replies with a written answer instead of a list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode all work this way.

Why does AEO matter right now?

AEO matters because more people get their answer from AI and fewer of them click through to websites.

Gartner predicted that traditional search engine volume would drop by 25% by 2026 as people move to AI chatbots and other virtual agents.

Ahrefs studied 300,000 keywords and found that when a Google AI Overview appeared, the top-ranking page got 34.5% fewer clicks in early 2025. When Ahrefs repeated the study with December 2025 data, that drop had grown to 58%.

In simple terms, ranking first on Google is worth less than it used to be. Being named inside the AI answer is where much of the attention now goes.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO tries to rank your page in a list of links, while AEO tries to get your brand named inside the answer itself.

SEO and AEO share a lot of groundwork. Both need a fast site that search engines can read, useful content and other websites talking about you.

The difference is the finish line. With SEO you win when your page ranks. With AEO you win when the AI mentions your product, describes it correctly and links to you as a source. A page can rank well on Google and still be left out of the AI answer.

Is AEO the same as GEO or LLMO?

Yes, mostly. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) are other names for the same goal.

People use different labels because the field is new. We use AEO because the goal is simple to say: become the answer.

How do AI engines decide which brands to name?

AI engines name the brands that trusted sources mention often, describe consistently and explain clearly.

Many AI tools search the web before they answer. This step is often called retrieval. They pull pages, read them and then write a summary that names products and links to sources, which are called citations.

The pages they pull most are review sites, comparison articles, community threads such as Reddit, and clear product pages. If those places describe you the same way, the AI feels confident naming you. If they disagree or never mention you, it usually leaves you out.

Why does AEO matter so much for B2B SaaS?

Software buyers now ask AI to build their shortlist, so being missing from the answer means being missing from the deal.

B2B buyers ask questions like "best CRM for a 20-person sales team" or "alternatives to a well-known tool". These are exactly the questions AI tools answer with a short list of named products.

If a competitor is on that list and you are not, the buyer may never visit your website or book a demo.

What does AEO work actually include?

AEO work covers five things: prompt research, answer-first content, structured data, earning mentions and tracking.

First, we find the real questions your buyers type into AI tools. Second, we rewrite key pages so the answer sits in the first sentence or two.

Third, we add structured data, which is code called schema that tells machines who you are and what you sell. Fourth, we earn mentions on the third-party sites that AI already trusts. Fifth, we track the results every month.

How do you measure AEO results?

You measure AEO by running the same buyer questions through each AI tool and counting how often, how high and how well you are named.

The main measures are share of voice, which is your share of all brand mentions in the answers. Mention rate is how often you appear at all. Citation rate is how often the AI links to your site as a source.

Average position shows where you appear in the list, and sentiment shows whether the description is positive.

AI answers change from one run to the next, so good tracking repeats each question several times and looks at the trend over weeks instead of a single screenshot.

How long does AEO take to work?

Fixes to your own site can show up within weeks, while earning trust on third-party sites usually takes a few months.

Tools that search the web live, such as Perplexity and ChatGPT search, can pick up changes quickly. Answers that rely on what a model learned during training move more slowly, because they only change when the model is updated.

What can I do this week to improve my AEO?

Start by asking AI tools your buyers' questions, then fix the pages and listings that shape those answers.

Write down ten questions a buyer would ask before choosing a tool like yours, and ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Note who gets named and which sources are linked.

Then make sure your homepage and product pages say in one plain sentence what you do and who it is for. Check that your profiles on review sites such as G2 and Capterra are complete and up to date. Finally, add a clear comparison or alternatives page for your category.
