What is Co-Citation?

Also called Shared-source citation

Definition

Co-citation occurs when two sources or entities are cited together by another source. In SEO and AEO discussions, the term is sometimes extended to shared brand references, so analysts should distinguish actual shared citations from simple textual co-occurrence.

How does Co-Citation work?

In its strict sense, co-citation describes a relationship created when one document cites two other sources. Repeated shared citations can help analysts map related literature or subject areas.

The relationship is about citation structure, not necessarily agreement between the cited sources.

Marketing usage can be looser and may count brands appearing in the same comparison answer. That is often better labeled co-occurrence unless both receive explicit references.

Define the unit carefully before building a report or claiming that an engine associates two vendors.

Why does Co-Citation matter for B2B SaaS?

B2B SaaS buyers commonly compare related products in the same research session. Shared appearances can show which competitors or categories surround a vendor in observed answers. This helps assess whether positioning aligns with the intended buyer need.

However, proximity is not endorsement. A comparison can cite one company as a good fit and another as an unsuitable alternative.

No public Google or OpenAI rule establishes that arranging repeated co-citations with a market leader transfers its authority to a smaller vendor.

What is an example of Co-Citation?

A hypothetical industry article links to documentation from Salesforce and HubSpot while discussing CRM data synchronization. The two documentation sources are co-cited by that article.

The relationship shows a shared discussion context, not that the products are identical.

An AI answer that merely names both companies without linking either one creates textual co-occurrence under a stricter reporting definition.

If the answer links both documentation pages, the analyst can record co-citation as well. Keeping these events separate prevents inflated evidence claims.

How do you improve or measure Co-Citation?

  • Define whether the analysis concerns source URLs, domains, or named entities.
  • Record the document or answer that creates the shared reference.
  • Classify the surrounding context as comparison, integration, contrast, or another relation.
  • Avoid treating repeated syndication as independent confirmation of a relationship.

Use co-citation to explore observed context and potential research opportunities. Validate the underlying passages before drawing strategic conclusions.

Attempts to manufacture unrelated shared mentions can reduce content usefulness and do not provide evidence of a reliable ranking or recommendation effect.

Frequently asked questions about Co-Citation

Is co-citation the same as a backlink?

No. A backlink connects one page to another. Co-citation describes two sources being referenced by a third source.

Is co-occurrence the same as co-citation?

Not under a strict definition. Co-occurrence only requires appearing together, while co-citation requires shared source references. Marketing reports should state which convention they use.

Does co-citation improve AI rankings?

There is no universal documented guarantee. Shared references can reveal topical context, but their presence alone does not establish a causal ranking or recommendation benefit.
