What is Entity SEO?

Also called Entity-based SEO

Definition

Entity SEO is the practice of making identifiable people, organizations, products, and their relationships clear to search systems. It combines accurate content, consistent identity information, and relevant structured data rather than relying only on keyword matching.

How does Entity SEO work?

Entity SEO starts by identifying what each page is about and which real-world thing each name represents.

An organization, its software product, and its founder are related entities, but they should not be described as interchangeable identities.

Visible content provides the primary explanation. Internal links, official profiles, and schema markup can reinforce it.

Google documents Organization structured data as a way to clarify administrative details and disambiguate organizations, not as a guaranteed ranking improvement.

Why does Entity SEO matter for B2B SaaS?

B2B SaaS buyers ask questions about categories, integrations, security, and alternatives. A vendor needs consistent descriptions across those contexts so a search engine can interpret the product accurately.

Conflicting names or vague positioning can make that interpretation harder.

Entity clarity also improves human evaluation. A buyer should be able to identify the publisher, understand what the software does, and verify important claims.

This practical clarity matters even when an AI engine never exposes its internal entity representation.

What is an example of Entity SEO?

Imagine a hypothetical company called Orbit Ledger that sells financial reconciliation software. Its homepage identifies the organization, while its product page explains reconciliation workflows and supported integrations.

An About page distinguishes the legal business name from the product name.

Its external profiles point to the same official domain and use compatible descriptions. The company does not label accounting software, its founder, and its parent organization as identical through sameAs.

Each relationship is described according to what it actually means.

How do you improve or measure Entity SEO?

  • Choose a consistent public name and document genuine alternative names.
  • Connect product, organization, and author pages with descriptive internal links.
  • Add accurate structured data that matches information visitors can see.
  • Review important third-party profiles for mistaken categories and outdated domains.

Measure identity accuracy separately from traffic and rankings. Track whether branded answers describe the correct product and whether category answers place it in relevant contexts.

A higher mention count is not useful if the engine repeatedly confuses the vendor with another organization.

Frequently asked questions about Entity SEO

Is entity SEO different from keyword research?

Yes. Keyword research studies how people phrase searches, while entity SEO clarifies the things those searches describe. The two practices can support each other.

Do you need a Wikipedia page for entity SEO?

No. A clear official website and accurate external references can establish identity without a Wikipedia article. Creating an unsuitable article is not a sound identity strategy.

Can entity SEO guarantee AI recommendations?

No. Accurate identity helps interpretation, but recommendation choices also depend on relevance, available evidence, retrieval, and the specific question.
